Project Description

Austrian Citizenship Days

The Austrian Citizenship Days are an annual nationwide campaign (each year between 23 April and 9 May) in order to raise and strengthen public awareness of citizenship education in Austria. The programme always forsees two strands – digital offers and events in the nine federal states, both strands covering a broad range of different topics and approaches of citizenship education.

In 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic the programme was adapted to the needs of home schooling. On each of the 17 Citizenship Days digital offers were provided to teachers and students, inculding: online-lectures, video-lectures, podcasts, pdf-brochures, interactive workshops, lesson plans, thematic online-dossiers. The topics covered were i.a. the pandemic, the tension between security & liberty, voluntary work, literature & citizenship education, freedom of press, climate change, labour market.

Particular attention was paid to ensuring that the offers can be easily adapted to regular school settings. Zentrum polis created a set of sustainable new digital offers that will impact its work in the next years.
